In Love with Pearls
It is my greatest gift that I can share my love of pearls with you! I started working with pearls in 2006, but I would say my love affair began long before then when I used to sneak my mom’s pearls out of her jewelry box. I received my first set of pearls when I was 8 years old and I have worn those pearls to every significant event of my life. Then, on a 2006 trip through Asia, I discovered amazing pearls and I was thrilled to be able to afford another strand (or two!). But, I wasn’t the only one who wanted them. I got orders from my mom, my sisters, friends and then the sweet ladies from the local Feed and Seed store. It seemed many women wanted these gorgeous pearls…so I came home and threw a “pearl party”.
A Pearl Graduate
I loved these pearls so much and so many other women did too. But, I figured if I was going to sell pearls, I wanted to know everything I could about them. So, I got a degree in Pearls! I currently have my Graduate Pearls Diploma from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). And I continue to travel. I have been on over 20+ pearl buying trips and I have traveled to over ten pearl farms so I can see pearl production upclose. Since we work closely with heirloom pearls, I have been learning a lot about antique pearls and the history of pearl cultivation (and pearl buying!)
The Evolution of Pearl
The Pearl Girls™ has changed a lot since I started it in 2006. I went from selling The Pearl Girls™ jewelry in pearl parties, with a wonderful group of sales reps, to selling wholesale. We still sell some wholesale but the bulk of our sales are online and at our shop at 548 Hawthorne Ave in Athens, GA. I am also so proud of The Pearl Girls® Reknot and Repair Department. We receive boxes and boxes of pearls and beaded jewelry from all over the world that we reknot, restring, and repair for our customers.
Growing this business while raising two small children has been very challenging. I remember sitting at my home office in 2010 watching my infant son kick and play on the floor and wondering if I could ever have the space to both work and keep my son close. It was then that I dreamed of creating an office with onsite childcare for my staff. I figured even if I could not have it, I would give it to other women. I opened that office (with two playrooms and an outside play area) in January of 2015. Then, in January of 2016, my son was having trouble in school and I decided to homeschool him to get him back on track. I had to do what I felt was most important for my family and do you know what happened? The staff of The Pearl Girls™ stepped up and stepped in. I felt so completely loved and supported and I realized that I did not have to hold up the structure for everyone else, we could all hold it up together. That is truly the greatest joy of this business are the amazing women I work with. My heart overflows with love for the women who have worked with me and continue to work with me to make The Pearl Girls ™ an amazing place.
And Our Customers
And can I tell you how wonderful our customers are? I receive hand-written notes, personal phone calls and emails from our customers. I call these wonderful people our greatest supporters. If *you* did not choose to support us, love us, shop with us then none of this would be possible. Thank you for growing with us, for calling us when the website has a hiccup, for understanding our mission and loving that we have chosen to run The Pearl Girls™ a bit differently. When we have a loud crew of kids in our playrooms and you come in to shop, thank you for understanding we might be the loudest and most energetic pearl shop you have ever seen! And maybe one day I can sound-proof our walls…
